Guarding the Guardian of the Mountain! is the 30th episode of Pokémon: BW Rival Destinies, the fifteenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 731st episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 736, Bulbapedia code BW078). It first aired in Japan on 10 May 2012 and in the United States on 8 September 2012. It falls within the season’s Twist Mountain to Icirrus City stretch (EP74–EP79).
Synopsis
Near Icirrus City, the group trains with a retired martial-arts movie star named Brycen and helps him save the mountain’s guardian, Volcarona, from a Pokémon Hunter. Brycen and his Beartic shatter two boulders rolling towards the group, and Cilan, a devoted fan of films such as Enter the Beartic, explains that Brycen quit acting after an accident during filming.
Ash and Krokorok join Brycen’s training, failing at handstands, rock leaps and rock-breaking punches, and Ash ends up in a waterfall pool. When a storm gathers and a red glow appears, Brycen fears for Volcarona, whose flames once replaced the sun after an eruption, and the group finds Rizzo the Pokémon Hunter netting it with the help of his Jellicent.
Rizzo agrees to free Volcarona if he loses, and Krokorok beats his male Jellicent with Dig and Crunch, but Rizzo then sends out a female Jellicent, whose Confuse Ray leaves Krokorok helpless. Brycen calls him a disgrace, and Beartic overpowers both Jellicent with Brine and double Ice Punches, freeing Krokorok and Volcarona. Officer Jenny takes Rizzo away, and Brycen reveals that he is the Icirrus City Gym Leader.
