Some Kind of Laziness! is the 31st episode of Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon – Ultra Adventures, the twenty-first season of the Pokémon anime, and the 1009th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 1015, Bulbapedia code SM075). It first aired in Japan on 17 May 2018 and in the United States on 20 October 2018. It falls within the season’s Ula’ula Island & Nanu’s grand trial stretch (EP73–EP77).
Synopsis
Training with Ula’ula’s lazy guardian Tapu Bulu, Ash helps Lycanroc overcome its rage at getting dirty, and Lycanroc learns Stone Edge while Rowlet learns Razor Leaf. Determined to prepare for Nanu’s trial, Ash heads for the Ruins of Abundance with Acerola, riding her Poké Ride Mudsdale across the Haina Desert, where Ash swallows sand and Rowlet is blown out of his backpack until Poipole catches it. The guardian lives on a plateau reachable only by a steep cliff, and while Pikachu, Acerola, Rotom, Mimikyu and Poipole leap or fly ahead, Ash refuses to be outdone and reaches the top first. There Rowlet lands on the head of Tapu Bulu, which is napping by a lake and answers Ash’s request with snores until Poipole sprays it with sludge.
After cleaning itself on the grass, Tapu Bulu digs a trench with its horns, plants seeds and makes them grow into full trees with a cry, resting among their leaves to absorb their energy. Rowlet flies into the blossoms, absorbs some of that energy and unleashes Razor Leaf for the first time. When rain begins to fall, Team Rocket shelter in a cave, where Mimikyu glows purple and strikes a series of ominous poses that teach Jessie its Z-Move. Meanwhile, Ash and his Pokémon splash around in the mud until Tapu Bulu lashes Lycanroc into a muddy pool, and Lycanroc’s eyes turn red. Ash grabs its face and reminds it how much it loved playing in mud and rain as a Rockruff; the memory calms it, the sun comes out, and Lycanroc hugs Ash. Impressed, Tapu Bulu challenges them to a battle.
Tapu Bulu rings the bell on its tail to create Grassy Terrain, and Ash reminds Lycanroc that it carries the power of both the Midday and Midnight forms. Wood Hammer slams Lycanroc into the rock wall, an uprooted tree blocks Rock Throw, and Tapu Bulu’s charge sends Lycanroc into the lake—but this time it climbs out calmly and shakes itself dry, impressing everyone. Tapu Bulu tosses aside a Tackle and fires Solar Beam, and Lycanroc leaps clear and, glowing with an orange aura, unleashes Stone Edge for the first time, forcing the guardian to retreat into its shell. Tapu Bulu ends the battle by ringing its bell and clapping its hooves in respect, then grows Oran Berries for Ash and his Pokémon. Ash declares himself ready for Nanu’s trial, and as the group leaves, Rowlet flies back to nap on Tapu Bulu’s head.
