Synopsis

Ash, Goh and Chloe help a farmer drive a horde of Diglett out of his carrot field, and Goh catches a Diglett and a Dugtrio before giving the Dugtrio to the farmer. A shipment of fresh vegetables arrives at the Cerise Laboratory from Laxton, a former student of Professor Cerise who left research two years ago to become a farmer, along with news that Diglett and Dugtrio are troubling his fields. Ash and Goh volunteer to help, and Cerise asks Chloe to join them. At Laxton Farm, Laxton’s Voltorb gives Eevee a jolt for getting too close, and Chloe recognises her father’s old student. Laxton serves them wonderfully tasty tomatoes, grown with fertiliser ground from moulted Golem shells, and shows them his largest field, where Voltorb burns away weeds. Suddenly Diglett pop up all over the carrot patch, far too many to handle, damaging carrots that are almost ready to harvest.

Goh sends out Cinderace, and the group pulls up carrots to find the Diglett underground, but a Dugtrio leads them and every one escapes, although the team gathers a large undamaged harvest. That night, Chloe observes that the Diglett move far more cleverly than her team did and suggests they need someone to coordinate them; after some hesitation, she agrees to take that role herself. The next morning she watches from Laxton’s balcony as coloured flags mark the corners of the field and calls directions to Ash and Goh, who cut off a Diglett and pull up its target carrot so that Goh can catch it. When the Dugtrio surfaces, Chloe guides the boys again, and Goh catches it before it can react. Without their leader, the remaining Diglett retreat in confusion. Laxton explains that the Diglett once lived on a nearby hill and never came down to the fields before, so the children go to investigate.

On the hill, Team Rocket have run out of food and are trying to farm, and Meowth orders his robot to play loud music to make the crops grow, the noise that drove the Diglett from their home. The music is so loud that nobody hears Team Rocket’s motto. Annoyed, Jessie and James summon the Rocket Prize Master, which produces a Drilbur and a Sandslash, and Goh sends out his new Dugtrio. A fierce battle rages unseen underground, with Dig against Drill Run, until both Rocket Pokémon are forced to the surface, Pikachu strikes them with Quick Attack, and Dugtrio’s Sand Tomb sends the trio flying. Over a carrot dinner at the farm, Goh sees the Diglett returning and gathering around his Dugtrio, and realises they need their leader. He hands Dugtrio’s Poké Ball to Laxton, showing him that the Pokédex says soil tilled by Dugtrio is ideal for crops, and Laxton happily welcomes Dugtrio and the Diglett to his farm. On the way home, Chloe races ahead of the boys.
