Synopsis
A hungry, mischievous Grookey turns up at the Cerise Laboratory, and when Goh discovers it belongs to Team Rocket, Grookey breaks free of them to become his Pokémon. Goh wakes from a nightmare in which his parents have turned into Rillaboom and asked him to look after his little brother, a Grookey, only to find a real Grookey clinging to his arm. His Rotom Phone warns that it already has an owner, and the Chimp Pokémon starts whacking everyone on the head with its stick; only Mimey dodges every blow until Grookey gets too hungry to continue. At breakfast it tries to steal food, crashes into Chloe and Eevee on their way to school, and dodges Pikachu’s and Yamper’s retaliation, which hits everyone else. Goh decides to find its Trainer, and with no online notices of a missing Grookey, Yamper’s nose traces its route into the lab and across town. On the way Grookey causes trouble but also revives some wilting flowers in a park with its stick, impressing the boys.
The trail ends at the Vermilion City Poké Mart, where security footage shows the Rocket Prize Master falling from the sky, Grookey climbing out, and Pelipper carrying the machine off without noticing. Grookey belongs to Team Rocket. Outside, the trio try to grab Pikachu and Grookey, unaware that Goh has been looking after it; Farfetch’d frees both with Night Slash, and when Team Rocket summon the Prize Master, only one Poké Ball falls out, empty, with a leaflet showing it should contain a Grookey. Jessie refuses to believe that the Grookey before her is theirs until the Ball recalls it on command, and the trio retreat behind a smoke bomb, leaving Grookey’s stick behind. That night both Grookey, in Team Rocket’s hideout, and Goh, in the lab, feel lonely, and Grookey sneaks out to find its stick and Goh.
The next morning Goh and Ash take the stick back to the park, where Grookey waits among the flowers it revived, and Goh and Grookey hug happily. Team Rocket arrive to reclaim their Pokémon and take it to headquarters for obedience training, but Grookey dodges every attempt to recall it, and when Pikachu knocks the Poké Ball out of Jessie’s hand, Grookey snaps it in two, freeing itself. Meowth inadvertently translates Grookey’s wish to be caught by Goh. Both Goh and Team Rocket throw a Poké Ball; Grookey smacks Team Rocket’s back at them and lets Goh’s catch it. When Meowth tries to net Grookey and Pikachu, Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blasts the trio off. At the lab, Goh introduces Grookey to his Pokémon in Cerise Park, and it apologises to Eevee for hitting it earlier, then promptly climbs onto Eevee’s back and rides off, with Goh in pursuit. With Grookey, Goh now owns all three Galar first partner Pokémon.
