Synopsis
A smoke bomb in the tunnels beneath Driftveil City scrambles Ash, Goh, Chloe and Team Rocket into mismatched pairs, Meowth falls for Chloe, and Goh catches a Durant. Ash, Goh and Chloe visit Unova’s Driftveil City after hearing of a new Klink evolution, which turns out to be a marketing gimmick for Klink-shaped cookies, and Team Rocket, equally disappointed, decide to steal Pikachu. Grookey and Eevee leap into a large hole in the ground and their Trainers follow, while Team Rocket leave Wobbuffet at the entrance with a net and go in after them. Underground, Jessie learns that the Hyper-Capture Machine is broken, and as she argues with Meowth, James drops Morpeko’s Poké Ball and it emerges Hangry, giving away their position. Jessie’s smoke bomb fills the tunnel, and when it clears, Ash is with Morpeko, Jessie and James have Eevee, Goh has Pikachu, Chloe has Meowth, and Grookey is alone.
Ash reluctantly feeds Morpeko his Klink cookies, Jessie and James plan to make Eevee a Team Rocket spy and teach it their motto, though James starts to miss Meowth, and Grookey finds a tunnel back to the surface, where it takes Wobbuffet’s net to play with. Goh and Pikachu follow a terrible smell into a sewer, where a Seismitoad shrugs off Thunderbolt; Pikachu’s Iron Tail lands, but a second Iron Tail knocks it into the water before Goh can throw a Poké Ball, and Goh notices that Pikachu charges ahead just like Ash. Chloe asks Meowth why he does bad things and how he learned to talk; he explains he did it to impress a girl long ago. When he says he likes kind girls, Chloe tells him that kindness must be returned and suggests he stop doing bad things and make up with his friends, and the smitten Meowth decides to quit Team Rocket and let Chloe catch him.
Every underground group runs into a swarm of Durant nesting in the tunnels, while on the surface Grookey angers a group of Heatmor, which chase it and Wobbuffet below. When the Durant and Heatmor start fighting, the reunited groups use the chaos to escape, with Eevee back with Chloe and Meowth, Morpeko and Wobbuffet back with Jessie and James. Outside, Goh finds that a Durant has followed them, wins its approval and catches it. Meowth tries to confess his feelings to Chloe but ends up in front of Jessie, who takes it as an apology. Then the still-Hangry Morpeko finds that Ash has dropped his cookies, and before James can recall it, its Aura Wheel blasts both groups into the sky, the first time Ash and his friends have blasted off with Team Rocket in years. At sunset the three friends agree the day was a success, while Team Rocket dangle from a tree and Meowth still pines for Chloe.
