Synopsis

Goh takes on his first Project Mew Trial Mission, finding the golden scales of a Volcarona in an abandoned Unova gold mine, and earns his first token after outwitting a Pokémon hunter. On Alola’s Mount Lanakila, Quillon and Danika return the Alolan Ninetales that Goh rescued to its home, and Danika teases Quillon for being curious about the Trainer who caught it. At the Cerise Laboratory, Goh is offered three Trial Missions and chooses to find Volcarona’s golden scales, puzzling because Volcarona’s scales are not normally gold. Recalling the golden chamber in the Colossus Ruins of Unova’s Desert Resort, where Goh once caught Golurk, the boys go there. The excavation leader says sightings stopped when Pokémon hunters arrived, but shows them a mural of Volcarona saving people from the cold when “a mountain’s rage” darkened the sky. Goh guesses that this means a volcano, and the leader points them to a ghost town sealed off after an eruption during a gold rush.

In the abandoned gold mine, Goh catches a Roggenrola after Inteleon weakens it with Snipe Shot, but a swarm of Roggenrola sends the boys fleeing in a runaway minecart that nearly flies off a cliff until Inteleon saves them. Pikachu powers an elevator with Thunderbolt, taking them to a cavern where a man is being attacked by a Ferrothorn; Cinderace defeats it with Pyro Ball and Goh catches it. The man, Nito, claims to be studying the mine’s Pokémon and joins their search. At an old railway station, Ash finds a cluster of Larvesta Eggs, and Nito reveals himself as a hunter: his Galvantula traps the boys in Sticky Web while he loads the Eggs into a wheelbarrow to sell. Two Larvesta and a flame from the tunnel drive him off, burning through the web, and Ash returns the Eggs. But the station is ablaze, and the Water moves of Inteleon, Krabby and Dracovish barely dent it.

As a burning tower topples towards the Eggs, a flame from the tunnel saves them, fired by a Shiny Larvesta, which evolves into a golden Volcarona and absorbs the blaze with Fire Spin. It flies over the boys, scattering golden scales, and Goh collects some in a jar, completing his mission. At the mine entrance, Nito and his henchmen ambush them to steal their Pokémon and capture the Volcarona, but Danika and Quillon arrive with their Urshifu: Danika’s Rapid Strike Style knocks out most of the hunters’ Pokémon with Surging Strikes, while Quillon’s Single Strike Style defeats a Conkeldurr with Wicked Blow. Danika verifies the scales and awards Goh his first Project Mew token. Goh is embarrassed at needing rescue, but Quillon points out that they dealt only with the hunters and that Goh completed the mission alone. Professor Amaranth arrives to hand the hunters to Officer Jenny, and Danika encourages Goh to keep training.
