Synopsis
Misdirected to Spikemuth by Team Yell, Ash races to Wyndon Stadium on the back of Gym Leader Piers’s motorcycle and defeats Piers’s sister Marnie in a World Coronation Series battle between Gigantamax Gengar and Gigantamax Grimmsnarl. Ash and Goh arrive in Spikemuth expecting a battle, only to find Piers rehearsing with his band in the Dark-type Gym. Piers is annoyed by the interruption, but when Ash mentions that his next opponent is Marnie, Piers reveals that she is his younger sister and that she is waiting for Ash at Wyndon Stadium: Team Yell, Marnie’s devoted fans, have deliberately sent him to the wrong town. With time running out, Piers drives Ash to Wyndon on his motorcycle, explaining on the way that Marnie entered the World Coronation Series to make Spikemuth famous again. The town’s Gym has no Power Spot, and Piers’s preference for traditional battles without Dynamax has made it unpopular, so Spikemuth has nearly emptied out, something Piers blames on himself.
At Wyndon, the scheduled time has passed, but Marnie refuses to win by default, and Ash arrives just in time; when Team Yell scold him for being late, Marnie rebukes them, saying a forfeit victory would mean nothing. Piers and Goh watch from the stands as Ash’s Gengar faces Marnie’s ace, Grimmsnarl. Spirit Break overpowers Gengar’s Dazzling Gleam, Gengar’s Ice Punch knocks Grimmsnarl down, and then Grimmsnarl’s sudden bow lures Gengar into its signature move, False Surrender, for heavy damage. Marnie Gigantamaxes Grimmsnarl, and Piers tells Goh that Dynamax battles are her specialty, so the siblings help their hometown in their own ways. G-Max Snooze makes Gengar drowsy, but it fights off sleep, and while Gengar slips through the shadows Max Quake hits it hard and its Sludge Bomb barely scratches the giant.
Ash Gigantamaxes Gengar, and Max Ooze clashes with Max Starfall until Grimmsnarl’s Gigantamax wears off. It dodges Max Hailstorm, lands Spirit Break and charges with Darkest Lariat, which shields it even through G-Max Terror. As Gengar’s own giant form begins to fade, Ash has it swallow Grimmsnarl whole and spit it out again as it shrinks. Marnie’s Stomping Tantrum, powered up after a missed attack, meets Gengar’s Shadow Ball, which overpowers it and knocks Grimmsnarl out. Ash wins, rising to 15th in the World Coronation Series, and the crowd applauds Marnie too. Outside, Team Yell tell Marnie that her battle has made many people want to visit Spikemuth, giving the town new hope. Smiling broadly, Marnie shakes Ash’s hand and promises to keep improving, and Ash feels closer than ever to the Master Class.
