Overview

Generations booster pack (Charizard art)

Released on February 22, 2016, Generations was Pokémon’s love letter to its own history — a special expansion built to mark the franchise’s 20th anniversary. Instead of chasing the competitive metagame, Generations looked backward, filling its 83-card main set almost entirely with first-generation Kanto Pokémon in fresh, nostalgic artwork, from Caterpie and Paras all the way up to Snorlax and the three iconic starters.

What made Generations unusual was how you actually got it. There were no Generations booster boxes on shelves. The packs were instead tucked inside a whole wave of anniversary products: the eleven Mythical Pokémon Collections (each with a Full-Art mythical promo), the Red and Blue Collection boxes, a Generations Elite Trainer Box, and the lavish Super-Premium Collection: Mew & Mewtwo. Chasing the set meant chasing the merchandise.

The release also carried a bonus 32-card subset — the Radiant Collection (numbered RC1–RC32) — loaded with premium alternate-art cards and chase Pokémon-EX like Sylveon-EX and M Gardevoir-EX. Between the main set and the Radiant Collection, Generations gave collectors 115 cards to hunt down.

From the official set description:

Train On with Pokémon TCG: Generations! Celebrate 20 years of Pokémon with the Pokémon TCG: Generations expansion, covering every stage of a Trainer’s journey, from the choice of a first partner Pokémon to the most Elite of Trainer battles. Featuring Pikachu, Snorlax, Ninetales-EX, and Jolteon-EX, plus Mega Charizard-EX, Mega Blastoise-EX, and Mega Venusaur-EX, the Generations expansion is a power to be reckoned with! Train On.™

The Kanto Starters Go Mega

The beating heart of Generations is its trio of Kanto starter Mega Evolutions — the cards every 20th-anniversary collector wanted in a binder.

M Charizard-EX (#12)

M Charizard-EX (#12)

The undisputed star of the set. Charizard is always the Kanto crowd favourite, and its Generations Mega — a 220-HP fire-breather with the punishing Wild Blaze attack — became the single most desirable card of the release. It anchored the Red Collection box and remains the card most associated with Generations.

M Blastoise-EX (#18)

M Blastoise-EX (#18)

The Water-type powerhouse. M Blastoise-EX brought a heavy-hitting 210-HP body and headlined the Blue Collection, completing the nostalgic starter trio that defined the anniversary line-up.

M Venusaur-EX (#2)

M Venusaur-EX (#2)

The Grass-type of the trio. Rounding out the Kanto starters, M Venusaur-EX pairs a bulky frame with healing utility, and its Generations printing is a favourite for players building a full set of anniversary Megas.

Eeveelutions & Fan Favourites

Generations leaned hard on beloved Pokémon, and few are more beloved than the Eeveelutions. Several got the EX treatment across the main set and the Radiant Collection.

Vaporeon-EX (#24)

Vaporeon-EX (#24)

Water Eeveelution-EX. A slick, popular card whose artwork and typing keep it in steady collector demand.

Jolteon-EX (#28)

Jolteon-EX (#28)

The competitive one. Jolteon-EX’s Flash Ray — snipe damage that ignores Weakness and Resistance — earned it fringe play in the Standard format, making it the rare Generations card that showed up on tournament tables.

Leafeon-EX (#10)

Leafeon-EX (#10)

Grass Eeveelution-EX. One of the main-set EX cards printed under the unusual name-first file naming, Leafeon-EX is a clean, sought-after collector piece.

Flareon-EX (RC6)

Flareon-EX (RC6)

The Radiant Collection Eeveelution. Flareon-EX appears twice in the Radiant Collection — a regular RC6 printing and a Full-Art RC28 — giving Eevee fans an extra chase.

Kanto Classics Reimagined

Beyond the Megas, Generations is stuffed with gorgeous new takes on ordinary Kanto Pokémon — the kind of cards that make the set feel like a nostalgia trip.

Pikachu (#26)

Pikachu (#26)

The mascot. A charming Generations Pikachu was an obvious anniversary must, and it headlined the Pikachu-themed Red & Blue Collection promos.

Snorlax (#58)

Snorlax (#58)

A collector staple. Snorlax’s big, friendly Generations artwork made it one of the more popular non-EX pulls in the set.

Gengar (#35)

Gengar (#35)

Kanto’s favourite ghost. Gengar’s moody Generations print is a highlight for fans of the classic Ghost-type line.

Gyarados (#23)

Gyarados (#23)

From Magikarp to menace. The set includes the full Magikarp–Gyarados line, with Gyarados’ dramatic artwork a fan favourite.

The Radiant Collection (RC1–RC32)

The 32-card Radiant Collection subset is where Generations gets truly premium. Every card uses a glossy, full-bleed treatment, and the subset hides some of the release’s biggest chase cards.

M Gardevoir-EX (RC31)

M Gardevoir-EX (RC31)

The Radiant Collection crown jewel. M Gardevoir-EX anchored a genuine Fairy-type deck in Standard and is the subset’s most valuable competitive card — a rare case where a chase collectible was also tournament-relevant.

Sylveon-EX (RC21)

Sylveon-EX (RC21)

Fairy fan favourite. Sylveon-EX appears as both a regular RC21 and a Full-Art RC32, and its popularity keeps prices strong across both printings.

Charizard (RC5)

Charizard (RC5)

A non-EX chase. Even without the EX tag, the Radiant Collection Charizard is one of the subset’s most wanted cards — because it’s Charizard.

Diancie (RC22)

Diancie (RC22)

Mythical sparkle. The Radiant Collection Diancie is a standout among the subset’s Mythical and Fairy cards.

Jirachi (RC13)

Jirachi (RC13)

Wish-maker. Jirachi’s RC13 printing is a favourite for Mythical collectors and ties neatly into the anniversary’s Mythical Pokémon theme.

Products & Print Versions

Because Generations never had its own booster boxes, the packs travelled inside a broad wave of 20th-anniversary products — and collecting the set means recognising them all. Each Booster pack came in one of four Kanto-starter or Pikachu artworks. The Elite Trainer Box and the eleven Mythical Pokémon Collections were the most common sources, while the Red & Blue Collection boxes and the show-stopping Super-Premium Collection: Mew & Mewtwo sat at the high end.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Generations is a collector’s set through and through, and its value is concentrated in the premium Radiant Collection and the marquee Kanto Megas.

Sylveon-EX — Full Art (RC32)

Sylveon-EX — Full Art (RC32)

The set’s ultimate chase. The Full-Art Sylveon-EX that closes out the Radiant Collection is the most valuable single from the entire release — a gorgeous, hard-to-pull card that Fairy fans and set-completionists alike hunt for.

M Gardevoir-EX (RC31)

M Gardevoir-EX (RC31)

Beauty and playability. M Gardevoir-EX is both a stunning Radiant Collection card and the one Generations chase that also won games, which keeps demand — and price — consistently high.

M Charizard-EX (#12)

M Charizard-EX (#12)

The main set’s most valuable card. It’s Charizard, it’s a Mega, and it’s the face of the anniversary set. That combination alone makes #12 the priciest pull outside the Radiant Collection.

Ninetales-EX (#13)

Ninetales-EX (#13)

A quiet sleeper. Ninetales-EX is one of the more sought-after main-set EX cards, helped along by classic Kanto appeal and comparatively short supply.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Generations was designed for collectors, not the tournament grind, so it added fewer Standard staples than a normal expansion. Even so, a handful of its cards found real competitive homes.

M Gardevoir-EX (RC31)

M Gardevoir-EX (RC31)

The set’s competitive headliner. M Gardevoir-EX anchored a legitimate Fairy-type deck in the Standard format, using its Brilliant Arrow attack and a fat HP pool to trade favourably with the format’s EX attackers.

Jolteon-EX (#28)

Jolteon-EX (#28)

A precision sniper. Jolteon-EX’s Flash Ray deals damage that ignores Weakness and Resistance and reaches the Bench, earning it niche play as a tech attacker in Lightning and toolbox builds.

Vaporeon-EX (#24)

Vaporeon-EX (#24)

Water-type utility. Vaporeon-EX slotted into Water strategies as a flexible EX option, one of several Eeveelutions the set pushed into playable territory.

Generations’ biggest competitive contribution, though, was a batch of useful reprinted Trainers: Olympia (#66) for draw-and-heal, Team Flare Grunt (#73) and Crushing Hammer (#60) for Energy disruption, Red Card (#71) for hand control, and Evosoda (#62) and Energy Switch (#61) for consistency — role-players that quietly showed up in decks for the rest of the XY era.

Trivia & Points of Interest

  • You couldn’t buy a booster box. Generations was never sold as standalone booster boxes — the only way to pull its cards was inside 20th-anniversary products like the Mythical Pokémon Collections, the Red & Blue Collections, the Elite Trainer Box, and the Super-Premium Collection: Mew & Mewtwo.
  • A Kanto love letter. The 83-card main set is built almost entirely from Generation I Pokémon, matching the anniversary theme right down to the three starter Mega Evolutions.
  • No theme decks. Fitting its collector-first design, Generations shipped with no associated theme decks at all — a rarity for a numbered expansion.
  • Imakuni? made the cut. The set includes the joke Supporter Imakuni? (#63), named after the eccentric Japanese Pokémon musician — a wink to long-time fans hidden among the Kanto classics.
  • The Radiant Collection came from Japan’s PokéKyun Collection. The glossy RC1–RC32 subset traces directly back to the Japanese CP3 PokéKyun Collection released two months earlier.

Japanese Sets, Videos & Gallery

Generations has no single Japanese counterpart. Its cards were assembled from several Japanese XY BREAK-era releases — most importantly the CP3 PokéKyun Collection (December 11, 2015), the direct source of the Radiant Collection subset, plus a spread of promotional and starter-pack cards. That patchwork origin is a big part of why Generations plays like a “greatest hits” anniversary set rather than a conventional expansion. The Japanese set proper released on February 27, 2016, just days after the English launch.
