Synopsis
Rhonda of Sinnoh Now reports that Contest Master Wallace, a former Sootopolis Gym Leader and the reigning Hoenn Champion, will host the Wallace Cup at Lake Valor. Dawn, watching at a Pokémon Center while Ash and Brock train for the Pastoria Gym, is inspired to train too. Piplup’s Whirlpool, Buneary’s bounces, Ambipom’s Swift and Pachirisu’s Discharge grow into a huge combination, until she remembers Zoey’s advice that the Pokémon should be the focus, panics and calls a halt, and the attacks crash down on her, frizzing her hair. Nurse Joy arrives with Rhonda and her crew, Brock’s flirting ending in the usual Poison Jab. Rhonda explains that Wallace tours Kanto and Hoenn promoting his Cup, whose Aqua Ribbon counts as an official Ribbon in any region, and that he is on a day off somewhere nearby. Dawn decides to enter, while Team Rocket, eavesdropping from a rooftop, hear Jessie vow to win in honour of her released Dustox.
A fog and a melodic voice lead Ash, Dawn and Brock to Wallace himself, relaxing with his Milotic, which Pikachu and Piplup play with happily. Wallace tells them that the bond with one’s Pokémon matters most, and Dawn promises to keep his whereabouts secret. Hearing that Dawn will enter his Cup, Wallace asks to see her Contest moves, so Ash challenges her to a practice Contest Battle, Buizel against Piplup. Wallace praises both Trainers and suggests that Ash enter the Wallace Cup with Buizel, which Ash agrees to after Dawn’s encouragement. Piplup’s moves are polished, Wallace tells Dawn, but she relies too heavily on rehearsed routines; she should play with her Pokémon more, and Dawn realises that this is what she has been missing. Then Jessilina bursts in, gushing over Wallace and Milotic and presenting her Seviper dressed up as a Milotic, which only baffles him, until James and Meowth drag her away.
To demonstrate what relaxed play can achieve, Wallace and Milotic give a performance of their own: Milotic uses Safeguard, Aqua Ring and Dragon Pulse, then finishes with a Twister that whirls wind and water around its body. Jessie asks him to teach Seviper Aqua Ring, but he tells her that is impossible, and he and Milotic leave riding a wave. Jessilina vows to Dawn that she will win, and Rhonda’s cameraman reveals that his battery died, so Rhonda misses her scoop and accidentally bonks herself with the boom microphone. That night the friends watch Marian interview Wallace on TV, and while Dawn feels she still has far to go, Ash and Brock remind her to relax and play with her Pokémon. Then Nurse Joy tells Ash he has a call from Snowpoint City. At the Snowpoint Pokémon Center, a girl watching the same broadcast is told that her call to Ash has gone through, and she stands up to reveal herself as May.
