Caution: Icy Battle Conditions! is the 31st episode of Pokémon: BW Rival Destinies, the fifteenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 732nd episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 737, Bulbapedia code BW079). It first aired in Japan on 17 May 2012 and in the United States on 15 September 2012. It falls within the season’s Twist Mountain to Icirrus City stretch (EP74–EP79).
Synopsis
Ash wins the Freeze Badge from Brycen on the Icirrus Gym’s ice-covered battlefield, with Krokorok defeating Beartic in the final round. Iris arrives bundled up against the cold, while Ash and Pikachu slip across the frozen floor, and Brycen opens the three-on-three battle with Vanillish, whose Astonish, Icicle Spear and Blizzard freeze Krokorok’s legs until Ash recalls it.
In his first Gym battle, Scraggy blocks Icicle Spear with its loose skin and lands a stray Focus Blast that curves back into Vanillish before finishing it with Headbutt. Brycen’s Cryogonal then traps Scraggy in Rapid Spin and knocks it out with Aurora Beam, but Pignite breaks through Cryogonal’s Reflect and spin by aiming Fire Pledge at its centre.
Beartic douses Pignite’s Flame Charge with Brine and wins with Icicle Crash and Aerial Ace, bringing Krokorok back into the fight. Beartic blocks Stone Edge with a wall of icicles and freezes Krokorok’s snout with Ice Punch, but Krokorok breaks free and, borrowing the tactic Bianca’s Emboar used in the Clubsplosion, catches the ricocheting stones and hurls them through Beartic’s Aerial Ace. Brycen awards Ash his seventh Badge and recommends the Opelucid Gym next, leaving Iris uneasy.
