Synopsis
Feeling neglected while Ash trains his rising star Riolu, Pikachu runs away after Delia’s car towards Pallet Town, with Mimey chasing after him to keep him safe, until Ash comes home to apologise. The episode opens with Riolu winning a World Coronation Series match: Tony’s Electabuzz paralyses it with Thunder Wave and lands Electro Ball, but Ash’s cheering gets Riolu up, and its Vacuum Wave beats Electabuzz’s final Thunderbolt, lifting Ash from 921st to 901st. Ash says he will use Riolu in his next challenge too, and back at the lab Riolu trains into the evening against Ash’s Farfetch’d and Goh’s Farfetch’d and Beedrill while Pikachu’s turn goes unnoticed. When Ash finally apologises, he finds Pikachu asleep, and when he starts praising Riolu again, Pikachu shocks him.
Delia drops in after visiting a friend, cooks a lavish dinner and accepts Professor Cerise’s offer of the guest room. After Ash and Riolu rush off to train again, Chloe notices how jealous Pikachu seems, and Delia assures him that he will always be special to Ash. Asked how they met, she recalls that Ash overslept on his tenth birthday and got the last Pokémon left at Professor Oak’s lab, and that the two took time to get along. Pikachu refuses to leave Delia’s side that night and falls asleep to her lullaby. In the morning he wakes to see her driving back to Pallet Town; Ash again asks him to wait while he trains Riolu, and the heartbroken Pikachu runs after the car. Mimey orders him to come back, but when Pikachu refuses, it follows to keep him away from traffic.
Pikachu is swept away trying to swim a rushing stream until Mimey pulls him out. Mimey’s attempts to hitch a ride fail, but Pikachu’s cuteness persuades a truck driver to stop; the two fall asleep in the back, and when the truck turns the wrong way at a fork, Mimey jumps off with Pikachu and carries the exhausted mouse on its back. At a Lum Berry tree a Spearow steals Pikachu’s Berry, and when Mimey retrieves it with Psychic, the whole flock attacks until Pikachu drives them off with a Thunderbolt—reminding him of the Spearow flock he faced with Ash on their first day. Late at night they reach the Ketchum house, and Pikachu, having changed his mind, wants to go back to Ash—who appears, having come home to see him. Ash apologises, admitting that Chloe scolded him, and Pikachu leaps into his arms and gives him a Thunderbolt. Delia serves dinner, Goh promises to keep Ash out of trouble, and that night Ash sings Pikachu a lullaby until they both fall asleep.
