Synopsis

In a World Coronation Series rematch with Rinto, Ash’s Farfetch’d turns its broken leek into a sword and shield, evolves into Sirfetch’d and finally defeats Gallade. After a practice battle between Farfetch’d and Goh’s Scizor, which has learned X-Scissor, the boys head for the Pokémon Center and find an exhausted Bellsprout along the way. Goh’s Grookey revives it with its plant power, the two Grass types become friends, and at Grookey’s request Goh catches the Bellsprout. At the Pokémon Center, Ash’s Rotom Phone signals a nearby World Coronation Series participant: Rinto. He explains that he had only just joined the series when they first met and was still in the Normal Class, but he has now risen to the Great Class like Ash, now ranked 273rd, so they can battle officially. When Ash says that Farfetch’d has trained at Wikstrom’s Castle of Chivalry, Rinto reveals that he and Gallade once trained there too, and accepts Ash’s challenge.

A Drone Rotom referees as Gallade shrugs off Fury Cutter, and when Farfetch’d evades Night Slash with Detect, Gallade switches to Psycho Cut, which damages its leek. Rinto calls Ash and his Pokémon inadequate and tells Goh that Ash must find the answer for himself. Gallade breaks through with Night Slash and Close Combat, then uses Feint to get past Detect and slice off the top of Farfetch’d’s leek, and for a moment Farfetch’d seems to lose the will to fight. Remembering Wikstrom’s Aegislash, Ash tells it to use the broken pieces as a sword and a shield. Farfetch’d blocks Psycho Cut and trades fierce Night Slashes, until a close-range Psycho Cut throws it into Ash’s arms. When Rinto mocks their inadequacy again, Ash replies that feeling inadequate is exactly why they keep improving, and his words restore his partner’s confidence.

Farfetch’d dodges Night Slash with Detect and unleashes a flurry of Fury Cutter, landing critical hits, and as Gallade prepares to counter, it begins to glow: its broken leek pieces become a true leek sword and shield, and it evolves into Sirfetch’d. Finally impressed, Rinto has Gallade lower its guard and take a Night Slash to trigger its Justified Ability, raising its Attack, and the two clash with final Night Slashes. After a brief struggle, Sirfetch’d overpowers Gallade. Ash wins, rising from 273rd to 184th in the World Coronation Series, and Rinto admits that he may still be inadequate himself before the two shake hands, each vowing to keep improving. On the way back to the Cerise Laboratory, Goh praises Ash’s knightly battling, and when a passing car splashes through a puddle towards Ash, Sirfetch’d instantly shields him with its body, leaving Goh gushing about its chivalry.
