Synopsis

Goh’s first Project Mew assignment takes him to Mount Coronet, where he meets the team’s members and wins the right to take Trial Missions by catching an Alolan Ninetales stranded in Sinnoh. Recommended by Professor Oak, Goh is invited to Project Mew’s base at the foot of Mount Coronet, and Ash comes along to cheer him on. Gary teases Goh for joining after resisting and warns him that the project is very hard. Inside, a man who has Ash and Goh carry boxes of books about Mew turns out to be Professor Amaranth, the project’s leader, and Danika briefs them: the team will search for Mew on an island’s Table Mountain, the world’s largest mountain by surface area, during the single week between the wet and dry seasons before fog makes exploration impossible. Challengers earn tokens on their Rotom Phones by passing Trial Missions, and those with the most become Chasers; Danika and Quillon already hold two of the five places.

The base turns out to be an airship, which flies to an ice field high on Mount Coronet, and Goh is given six hours to catch an Alolan Ninetales, with Ash allowed to help because teamwork is central to the project. Most of Goh’s Pokémon return shivering, but Scizor finds Ninetales, which attacks on sight, freezes Scizor with Ice Beam and vanishes into a Blizzard. Ash and Goh wake in a cave, rescued by Quillon and his Weavile, who calls them weaklings and declares Goh disqualified. Quillon explains that hunters stole the Ninetales from Alola’s Mount Lanakila, and it escaped when their plane crashed, which is why it distrusts humans. Once the storm clears, Goh insists that time remains and guesses that Ninetales would seek a peak resembling its old home. There, Cinderace battles it, pushing a Pyro Ball through its Aurora Veil, but an Ice Beam from a wild Regice freezes Goh’s Poké Ball.

Ash takes on Regice while Goh approaches Ninetales without any Pokémon, pressing his hands against its Aurora Veil and promising to take it home to Mount Lanakila, until it lowers the barrier and lets him catch it. Ash and Pikachu are losing to Regice when Quillon sends out his Single Strike Style Urshifu, whose Wicked Blow smashes Regice back into its ice wall before its Hyper Beam can fire. At the base, Danika confirms the Ninetales and reveals that the mission was a qualifying test, not a Trial Mission: Goh has passed and may now take real Trial Missions, and the Ninetales will be returned to Alola. Ash realises this was what Gary’s warning meant. Professor Amaranth congratulates Goh, explains that Regice is important to the study of Pokémon’s origins, and reveals that Project Mew’s true goal is to learn what Pokémon really are and where they came from through Mew, the ancestor of all Pokémon. Goh’s determination to join grows stronger.
