Synopsis
A Johto town is trapped in endless night by a group of Unown granting a lonely girl’s wish, and Ash and Goh team up with Sinnoh Champion Cynthia to help the girl say goodbye to her friend Cleffa. Professor Cerise, Ren and Chrysa tell Ash and Goh about a town in Johto where night has not ended for a week, upsetting daily routines, so the boys go to investigate. An exhausted old man with a Sudowoodo explains that flowers are wilting and points out a Murkrow that locals avoid as an omen of bad luck; Goh feels sorry for it, asks whether it would like to join him, and catches it. After seeing a shooting star, the boys meet a little girl named Tiara, who is searching the sky for her friend Cleffa, which she believes has become a star. Her mother explains that Tiara and Cleffa had to part a few days earlier and that she told her daughter Cleffa had become a star.
Tiara’s mother adds that Tiara saw a strange Pokémon when the endless night began: small, black, with one big eye and shaped like a stick. Searching his Rotom Phone over lunch, Goh finds a match and runs to the town’s archaeology museum, where Pikachu catches a familiar scent and leaps into the arms of Cynthia. She has heard that Ash entered the World Coronation Series, and he promises to join her among the Masters Eight one day. Goh, thrilled to meet the Sinnoh Champion, learns that her real passion is archaeology and that she is in town to study ruins. When Goh shows her his picture of Unown, which gather near ruins and display mysterious powers in groups, Cynthia concludes that Unown must have created the endless night because of Tiara’s wish, and asks to meet the girl. In the park, over doughnuts Cynthia has brought, Tiara admits she wished she could watch the stars forever.
When the boys ask where the Unown went so that they can end the night, Tiara angrily refuses, and her feelings summon the Unown, which surround her in a dark mist and create illusions: a Pikachu that matches Ash’s Thunderbolt and Iron Tail blow for blow, a Cinderace that equals Goh’s, and a Garchomp that copies Cynthia’s. Cynthia orders Sandstorm, which hides her real Garchomp from its double, and Garchomp rises above the storm to strike the Unown and the illusions with Scale Shot, scattering them. Calm again, Tiara apologises, and Cynthia suggests that she needed time to accept the parting. Tiara tells Cleffa not to worry about her, though she would love to see it once more, and the Unown return to show her memories of their time together and an illusion of Cleffa, which she hugs, promising she will be all right. Daylight returns, the boys assure Tiara that she and Cleffa will always be friends, and Cynthia reminds her that stars keep shining even when they cannot be seen.
