Synopsis
Mysterious portals called Gates open across Sinnoh, and Ash, Goh and Chloe reunite with Dawn to investigate after an alternate-world Team Rocket steal Ash’s Lucario and Goh’s Inteleon. In another dimension, Dialga and Palkia clash while three shadowy figures declare that all Pokémon will soon belong to an alternate Team Rocket. In Sandgem Town, Dawn scolds her sleepy Piplup, which storms into a forest, where she sees a girl who looks exactly like her grab Piplup and step through a shrinking portal. She calls Ash, and Professor Cerise tells the boys that Pokémon have been vanishing all over Sinnoh, so Ash, Goh and Chloe head there. Over croquettes, Dawn explains what happened, and Ash wonders whether it was an Ultra Wormhole; Officer Jenny has told her of other disappearances and portals that people call “Gates.” When Team Rocket snatch Pikachu, Lucario frees it and Inteleon’s Snipe Shot pops their balloon.
Moments later a Gate opens and a second Team Rocket trio in black armour steps out; their Meowth’s Dark Pulse and Wobbuffet’s electric nets capture Lucario and Inteleon, and they retreat through the Gate. Dark Pulse knocks Ash back, but Goh and Dawn dive through. On the other side is a world almost identical to theirs, except for an aurora in the sky, missing flowers and no Pokémon anywhere. In Twinleaf Town, they find the room of an alternate Dawn, a Sinnoh League runner-up, who arrives carrying Piplup and apologises: she meant to return it, but the Gate closed. At the Sandgem Pokémon Center she shows them shelves of Eggs, once Pokémon; since the Gates appeared, Pokémon in her world have been forgetting their moves, devolving and finally turning into Eggs, and her own Piplup is one of them. Goh suspects a distortion of time and space, and Dawn thinks of Dialga and Palkia.
In their own world, Chloe suggests from a novel she has read that the Gates connect different worlds, and Ash remembers that Palkia can travel between dimensions. At the Canalave Library they meet Cynthia, who tells them about Dialga, Palkia and Arceus, said to have created them. As they leave, the alternate Team Rocket attack: Garchomp’s Dragon Claw meets Meowth’s Slash, but Garchomp suddenly cannot use Outrage, and Pikachu cannot use Thunderbolt. When Wobbuffet’s nets capture them, Cynthia’s Kommo-o tears them apart with Outrage, and the villains retreat through a Gate, with Ash and Chloe leaping in after them as the regular Team Rocket watch from a tree and see a Gate open beside them. In the other world, Ash and Chloe notice the aurora, the bare gardens and the absence of Pokémon. Ash cheerfully decides to worry about getting home later and runs to ask a passer-by for help, only to come face to face with his alternate self.
