Synopsis

Three mischievous Murkrow steal Ash’s Gym Badges and lead the gang on a chase through the forest. While Ash polishes his four Badges, the Murkrow distract everyone with a song and dance and snatch them. Noctowl knocks them off their perch but is beaten by a triple Double Team, Golbat locates them with Supersonic and is knocked out too, and Pikachu’s Thunder Shock finally drops the birds, just as Team Rocket’s claw grabs Pikachu.

The Murkrow hitch a ride in the trio’s balloon, fail to pinch Jessie’s earring, Meowth’s charm or James’s buckle, and pop it instead; they do take James’s beloved bottle caps, making him as determined as Ash. James’s net bazooka hauls up a boulder instead and the trio are flung away. Ash scales the cliff with Bulbasaur’s Vine Whip and grabs his Fog Badge, only to be knocked back down for cheering too loudly; Togepi then blows a plan to distract the birds with shiny things.

Noctowl plays dead and swipes the Badge, but Team Rocket’s Mega Murkrow Mark 5 mecha vacuums up the shiny objects and seizes Pikachu. Noctowl and the Murkrow scatter to confuse it until its legs short-circuit and the birds retrieve Pikachu, whose Thunderbolt from Noctowl’s back blasts the trio off. Ash gets his Badges back and thanks his feathered rivals.

  • This is a stand-alone episode: it can be skipped without losing the thread of the Johto story.
  • The Who’s That Pokémon? segment features Murkrow in Japan, where it almost always matched the episode, but Bellossom in the US, where 4Kids picked the Pokémon at random.

Changes in the English Dub
