Synopsis
Team Rocket fly off with Pikachu locked in a cage beneath their balloon, and Ash’s Starly cuts the cage loose with Wing Attack. In the scuffle Jessie kicks James’s clinging Carnivine, the balloon lurches and Starly accidentally pops it, so the trio come down beside a lake. There a wild Turtwig finds the caged Pikachu, opens it, and drives Team Rocket off with a powerful Tackle. When Ash and his friends run up, Turtwig mistakes them for more attackers and charges. Dawn has Piplup try to catch it, but Turtwig’s Razor Leaf misses Piplup and strikes a bush, and the wild Oddish hiding there retaliates with Sleep Powder that knocks out Ash and Pikachu. Turtwig carries the sleeping Pikachu away, and Dawn and Brock are met by an elderly woman named Clara, who brings them to her cabin and helps wake Ash.
Clara explains that Turtwig is the guardian of the lakeside. She nursed it back to health long ago, and it stayed on to look after the local Pokémon. Sure enough, Turtwig feeds Pikachu fruit and settles a quarrel between a Geodude and a Mankey by sharing berries with both. When Ash finds them, Turtwig tackles him until Pikachu explains he is a friend, and the little Grass type is embarrassed. An injured Linoone then wanders in, and Brock treats it with herbs at the cabin. Over lunch, Turtwig gives its own portion to the hungry Linoone, and when Ash praises it and offers a second helping, the delighted Turtwig clamps onto his head, just as Carnivine does to James. Out on the lake, however, Team Rocket are spying from their Magikarp submarine, waiting for a chance to strike.
The trio snatch Turtwig and Pikachu in a glass capsule and tow it toward their submarine. Ash dives in after them, Piplup swims to help, and Clara runs along the shore toward the river she guesses they will use to escape. Ash clings to the capsule as the sub dives, Turtwig’s Tackle fails to crack the glass, and Pikachu’s Iron Tail and Thunderbolt finally shatter it, shocking everyone nearby. Back on land the tired Turtwig restores itself with Synthesis, then tackles Seviper and bites back Carnivine when Team Rocket attack again, before Pikachu’s Volt Tackle blasts the trio away. As the group prepare to leave, Clara realises Turtwig wants to go with Ash, but it insists on a battle first. Pikachu’s Quick Attack and Iron Tail outmatch Razor Leaf, Tackle and a stubborn tail bite, and a Thunderbolt leaves Turtwig paralysed. Ash’s Poké Ball shakes and clicks, and he sets off for Jubilife City with Turtwig on the team.
