Synopsis
Lunch in the forest turns into a brawl when Aipom, picking oranges in the treetops, teases Piplup and then accidentally drops a fruit straight into its beak. Swift meets Bubble Beam, neither Pokémon will listen to its Trainer, and Turtwig steps between them, soaking up a Focus Punch and a Peck before a storm of Razor Leaf stops the fight. Ash’s thanks earn him an affectionate bite on the head. At that moment Paul strolls up, smirking. He is also heading for the Oreburgh Gym, and when he hears Turtwig is Ash’s newest catch he is unimpressed, so Ash demands a battle. Paul sends out Chimchar, and Dawn warns that Turtwig has the type disadvantage. Chimchar dodges Tackle and Razor Leaf, Turtwig strangely refuses to evade an Ember and patches itself up with Synthesis, and then Flame Wheel engulfs it, just as a net drops from above and scoops Turtwig up instead of Pikachu.
Paul does not even let Team Rocket finish their motto before Chimchar’s Ember hits their balloon. Turtwig slices itself free with Razor Leaf, Ash catches it and Pikachu’s Thunderbolt sends the trio flying, but the blast also knocks Ash, Turtwig, Paul and Chimchar off a cliff. Paul lands safely in a tree; Ash and Turtwig splash into the river and agree to meet Dawn and Brock on the far side of Bewilder Forest. Paul refuses to team up and warns Ash about the forest’s Stantler, whose antlers create illusions. Sure enough, a herd’s Hypnosis sends Ash into visions of empty fields, deserts and flying, until Paul drives the Stantler off with Ember. When one returns to glare at him, Paul knocks it out with Flame Wheel, catches it, discovers it knows only Tackle and releases it at once, telling Ash that friends are useless.
Ash makes peace with Turtwig, explaining that it should have dodged during the battle. Then a Stantler startles him into a tree, waking a swarm of Beedrill that chase him straight into Dawn and Brock. The fleeing trio run into a furious Ursaring that scatters the Beedrill and tramples after them, shrugging off Turtwig’s bite and the combined Iron Tail and Razor Leaf before firing Hyper Beam into the sky. On the road Paul stops it with Flame Wheel and catches it. He then offers Ash a rematch. Chimchar digs underground and pops out to Scratch; Turtwig fires Razor Leaf into the holes, Paul answers with Ember, and Ash has Turtwig follow Chimchar below ground and clamp onto its head with Bite. Flame Wheel blasts both back to the surface, and in the final clash Chimchar’s Flame Wheel overpowers Turtwig’s Tackle. Paul scolds his celebrating Chimchar and leaves, and Ash, beaten by his rival for the first time, vows revenge.
