Synopsis

A highlight reel from last year’s Pokémon Dress-Up Contest plays on Sinnoh Now, where Rhonda announces this year’s prize, a mystery Pokémon Egg, before Jack’s boom microphone smacks her in the face again. At the contest hall, Rhonda opens proceedings in a Cherrim mask and introduces the judges: Mr. Sukizo, Officer Jenny in a Growlithe hat and Nurse Joy in a Chansey hat. Pokémon must imitate other Pokémon as closely as possible, and Team Rocket enter in disguise: Jessie’s plan to win with her own acting is foiled because only Pokémon can compete, so James enters Mime Jr. and Jessie enters Meowth. Backstage, Brock is desperate for the Egg, convinced it will impress girls, and Ash imagines each of his Pokémon in costume until Pikachu volunteers, pulling a series of faces that wows the other contestants.

Ash enters Pikachu, Dawn Piplup and Brock Croagunk. The first round brings a Mightyena dressed as Suicune, a Weepinbell posing as Sunkern for a perfect score, a Gyarados as Caterpie, a Doduo failing to be a Dodrio, and Croagunk as a Politoed that will not stop clapping. Meowth imitates Weavile, Mime Jr. switches between impressions for full marks, and the defending champion’s Chatot sings like a Jigglypuff. Piplup, dressed as a Weedle, gets carried away and knocks itself out with Bubble Beam, but Pikachu’s shape-shifting faces earn a perfect score. The final brings together Pikachu, Croagunk, Mime Jr., Meowth as a Sunflora and Chatot, which imitates a Lapras. While Jessie distracts the crowd, Meowth sneaks toward the unguarded Egg, but Croagunk notices, and James is dragged away before he can perform.

Croagunk alerts Brock, who sees Team Rocket fleeing with the Egg. Officer Jenny’s Growlithe blocks their path, Seviper’s Haze is cleared by Staravia’s Gust, and the trio escape in their mechanical balloon with the Sinnoh Now helicopter in pursuit. Ash cannot risk a Thunderbolt near the Egg, Dustox’s Poison Sting stops Staravia and Mime Jr. copies Piplup’s Bubble Beam with Mimic, while Croagunk keeps on clapping. Then James, flattered by the commentator’s praise for Mime Jr., orders Teeter Dance, which confuses Meowth and Dustox so badly that the balloon lurches and Meowth knocks the Egg out of the basket. Buneary Bounces up to catch it, and Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blasts Team Rocket away. In the final judging, Croagunk, which stayed in character through the whole chase, is named the winner, and Brock receives the Egg.
