Synopsis

The episode opens with a glimpse ahead: Pikachu’s Volt Tackle knocks out a wild Buizel, Ash’s Poké Ball swallows it, and the ball begins to glow. On the road to Eterna City, Brock cuddles his Egg, wondering what will hatch, when two men stagger past carrying a fainted Bellsprout and Zigzagoon and warn the friends that a vicious Buizel has been attacking anyone who fishes nearby. Ash immediately wants to catch it and casts his line with the special lure Misty gave him, and when he refuses to lend it to Dawn, the two end up wrestling over the rod. Zoey arrives, teasing them for being as noisy as ever, and swaps news: she lost her last Contest and is taking a break with two Ribbons, and she tells a surprised Dawn about the upcoming Hearthome City Contest. Then Dawn’s line gets a bite, and she reels in the Buizel.

Buizel taunts its challengers. Dawn’s Piplup trades Bubble Beam with Water Gun before a series of Aqua Jets knocks it out, and Zoey’s Glameow breaks up Sonic Boom with Fury Swipes but is also downed by Aqua Jet. Pikachu fares better, landing Iron Tail and a Volt Tackle that knocks Buizel out, but the Sea Weasel bursts out of Ash’s Poké Ball, drives Pikachu into the lake with Aqua Jet and fires it back onto Ash’s head with Sonic Boom. Buizel then steals everyone’s fishing rods and swims off, with Team Rocket deciding it would make a fine gift for the Boss. At a waterfall the friends find their rods undamaged and Buizel training furiously, smashing rocks with Water Gun and eating Oran Berries. Inspired, Ash and Dawn train alongside it, and Piplup keeps diving from the top of the falls until it learns to steady itself with Peck.

Team Rocket net Buizel, but Turtwig’s Razor Leaf cuts it free, Piplup pulls Dawn and Buizel to shore, and Buizel’s Water Gun knocks the trio and their Pokémon into a tree. Buizel then challenges Piplup again, and Zoey advises Dawn to battle as she would in a Contest. Remembering her win over Kenny, Dawn has Piplup spin with Bubble Beam to surround Buizel in a swirling ring, then dive with Peck; Buizel breaks out of her first Poké Ball, but Piplup traps its Aqua Jet in Whirlpool and lands a critical Bubble Beam, and the second ball holds. Ash admits he wanted Buizel but is glad Dawn caught it, while Piplup faints from exhaustion. At sunset Zoey stays behind to fish, promising to see Dawn at the Hearthome Contest, and the friends head on toward Eterna City.
