Playing the Performance Encore! is the 5th episode of Pokémon DP: Sinnoh League Victors, the thirteenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 624th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 629, Bulbapedia code DP162). It first aired in Japan on 4 February 2010 and in the United States on 3 July 2010. It falls within the season’s The Daybreak Contest stretch (EP161–EP162).
Synopsis
Dawn defeats Ursula in the Daybreak Contest final to win her fifth Ribbon and a place in the Grand Festival. On the Battle Stage, Ursula’s Plusle and Minun, powered by Helping Hand, knock out Jessilina’s Seviper and Yanmega, while Dawn’s Cyndaquil and Mamoswine win their match even though their Flame Ice combination melts too soon.
In the final, Ursula taunts Dawn with “Dee Dee” and has Plusle and Minun use Encore, locking Cyndaquil and Mamoswine into repeating their last moves. Dawn breaks the spell by having her Pokémon hit each other, at a cost in points, and Spark and Charge Beam push her score down to half.
When her Pokémon call out to her, Dawn shakes off her fear. With about thirty seconds left she orders Flame Ice, Cyndaquil’s Flame Wheel wrapping Mamoswine’s Ice Shard, and it slams into Plusle and Minun to leave Ursula behind on points. Dawn wins the Daybreak Ribbon, Ursula vows revenge at the Grand Festival, and Ash sets his sights on the Sunyshore Gym.
