A Fishing Connoisseur in a Fishy Competition! is the 37th episode of Pokémon: Black & White, the fourteenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 690th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 695, Bulbapedia code BW037). It first aired in Japan on 23 June 2011 and in the United States on 15 October 2011. It falls within the season’s Rocks, fossils, fish & film stretch (EP34–EP38).
Premiered in order on 15 October 2011; in Japan it had been held back eleven weeks and rewritten after the earthquake.
Synopsis
Cilan reveals himself as a Fishing Connoisseur at a fishing contest secretly run by Team Rocket, and the group reunite with Bianca. She knocks Ash into a river, where a female Frillish takes an interest in him, and the friends decide to enter the competition, whose disguised organisers hand out rods and Fishing Poké Balls and promise a golden rod as the prize.
Cilan demonstrates patient technique, hooks a Blue-Striped Basculin and catches it after a battle with Pansage, while Iris dives in and grabs one by hand and Bianca’s line keeps snagging Ash. The female Frillish wraps Ash up until Pikachu’s Thunderbolt frees him.
When Team Rocket try to escape by boat with all the catches, Frillish drags the boat back and their plot is exposed. After a battle against Woobat and Yamask, the trio’s Poké Balls turn out to be empty, as Frillish has released every Pokémon, and the golden rod proves to be painted. Team Rocket flee behind Haze, and Bianca leaves to train in the Desert Resort.
