The Mystery of the Missing Cubchoo! is the 40th episode of Pokémon: BW Rival Destinies, the fifteenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 741st episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 746, Bulbapedia code BW088). It first aired in Japan on 19 July 2012 and in the United States on 17 November 2012. It falls within the season’s Season 2 begins: Undella Town stretch (EP85–EP89).
Synopsis
Detective Cilan helps a boy named Chris find his missing Cubchoo, which has slipped out to play with a wild Larvitar. Chris insists his Pokémon House is secure, with cameras and alarms all round, but Pikachu and Piplup squeeze through a hole dug under the wall and follow a trail of food scraps into the forest, while Cilan offers one theory after another.
At the end of the trail lies a sleeping Beartic surrounded by leftovers, and Cilan concludes that Cubchoo must have evolved, until Chris’s Poké Ball fails to recall it. Cubchoo then bounds out of a bush playing chase with a Larvitar, which Cilan decides must have opened its door. Chris admits he has never battled.
Iris explains that battling helps Pokémon grow, and Ash’s Scraggy takes on Larvitar: Headbutt meets Bite, Larvitar answers a missed High Jump Kick with Sandstorm, and Focus Blast and Hidden Power leave both too exhausted to continue, so the match is a draw. Inspired, Chris resolves to travel one day with Cubchoo and Larvitar. Meanwhile, Team Rocket’s submarine finds the undersea ruins they have been seeking.
