Ash, Iris, and Trip: Then There Were Three! is the 44th episode of Pokémon: BW Rival Destinies, the fifteenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 745th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 750, Bulbapedia code BW092). It first aired in Japan on 30 August 2012 and in the United States on 15 December 2012. It falls within the season’s The Junior Cup, Cameron & Operation Tempest stretch (EP90–EP97).
Synopsis
Ash’s Krokorok evolves into Krookodile to beat Iris’s Dragonite in the Junior Cup semi-final, but Trip’s Serperior defeats Ash in the final to win the tournament. Dragonite seems to obey Iris at first, dodging Crunch and Stone Edge and scorching Krokorok with Flamethrower, though Cynthia notices that it is really following its own wishes. Ice Beam freezes Krokorok, and a final Flamethrower sends it flying.
Krokorok struggles to its feet and evolves into Krookodile, slamming Dragonite across the field with a newly learned Dragon Claw. Enraged, Dragonite goes berserk, ignoring Iris completely; its wild Dragon Rush misses as Krookodile digs away, and Stone Edge knocks it out. Cynthia tells a dejected Iris that a newly caught Pokémon needs time to trust its Trainer.
In the final, Pignite’s type advantage counts for little against Serperior’s speed: it dodges Tackle, Flamethrower and repeated Flame Charges, lands Solar Beam and slips out of a ring of Fire Pledge before Frenzy Plant knocks Pignite out. Devastated to lose to Trip again, Ash resolves to win next time, and Trip receives the trophy and begins his battle against Alder’s Bouffalant.
