Going for the Gold! is the 22nd episode of Pokémon the Series: XY, the seventeenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 817th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 822, Bulbapedia code XY022). It first aired in Japan on 10 April 2014 and in the United States on 21 June 2014. It falls within the season’s The Battle Chateau to the Cliff Badge stretch (EP20–EP25).
CITV had shown it in the UK on 15 June 2014; Latin America skipped it altogether when a Cartoon Network special took its slot.
Synopsis
In Ambrette Town the group help an aquarium curator search for a legendary golden Magikarp, accidentally reel in Team Rocket’s submarine, and finally glimpse the real thing. The aquarium shows Water types from many regions, Ash recalls a rather different Piplup, and an old man directs them to the curator, Rodman, and his prickly Clauncher.
Rodman tells of a fisherman, shocked by a Starmie, who was saved from drowning by a giant golden Magikarp, and hands out fishing rods; Ash teaches Serena, who hooks a Corsola but fails to catch it, while Clauncher squabbles with Dedenne. Clemont’s lure attracts only angry Sharpedo, and Team Rocket’s Magikarp submarine gets shocked by a Starmie.
Clemont’s improved device seems to do nothing until every line bites at once and hauls up the submarine. Team Rocket grab Dedenne with the sub’s claws, but Clauncher frees it, dodges Pumpkaboo and Inkay, and with Water Gun, Crabhammer and Bubble Beam plus Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blasts the trio off. At sunset Rodman lets the group keep their rods, and the real Golden Magikarp leaps from the sea.
