Synopsis

Chasing reports of psychic energy on remote Cero Island in the hope of finding Mew, Ash and Goh instead meet Mewtwo, guardian of Pokémon hurt by humans, and lose a battle in which they stake their dreams. Professor Cerise hints that the energy might come from Mew, and Goh, who has dreamed of catching it since the summer camp, eagerly accepts the boat tickets. After climbing the island’s steep cliffs, Goh’s sensor finds no trace of the energy, so Ash simply leaps into the jungle and picks a direction. At a tree crowded with Pokémon, Goh catches an aggressive Mankey, whose relatives chase the boys into a bog; Heracross pulls Ash and Pikachu from the mire, and Caterpie’s String Shot makes a zip line across a swampy river. Partway across, a Kingler and a Krabby attack, Ash pulls Goh clear of the Kingler’s claws, and Goh catches the Krabby.

At a fast-flowing river a Gyarados breaks out of Goh’s Poké Ball, shrugs off Pikachu’s Electroweb and blasts everyone into the water, and not even Goh’s Dewgong can stop them from going over a waterfall. They wake on dry land among jungle roots, where wild Pokémon at play scatter at the sight of humans. Their guardian, Mewtwo, appears and telepathically demands to know why they have come; Ash recognises it at once and thanks it for saving him long ago. Goh’s scanner registers powerful psychic energy, and when Mewtwo asks why he wants to catch Mew, he explains that he wants to understand every Pokémon—and declares that he will catch Mewtwo too. Mewtwo warns that it was created to be the strongest Pokémon in the world, and Ash says that battling it would be another step towards becoming a Pokémon Master. Mewtwo agrees and tells the boys to stake their dreams on the outcome.

Mewtwo blocks Pikachu’s Iron Tail and Cinderace’s Blaze Kick and throws both Pokémon back at their Trainers, though Cinderace lands one Blaze Kick while Mewtwo holds off Pikachu’s Quick Attack. A counter Shadow Ball cancels Thunderbolt and slams Pikachu into a ledge, so Ash catches him and sends out Lucario. Double Team, Force Palm, Quick Attack, Blaze Kick and Reversal are all repelled, Mewtwo tossing both Pokémon aside, and its Barrier absorbs a combined Pyro Ball and Aura Sphere before an enormous Shadow Ball knocks out the boys’ team. Standing over the exhausted Trainers, Mewtwo asks again about their dreams, and they insist that they will keep going with their friends’ support. Mewtwo praises their bond with their Pokémon but warns that not all humans are alike, and the boys realise that the island’s Pokémon were rescued from people who hurt them. Thanking them for an enjoyable day, Mewtwo tells them that although they are still immature, their potential is limitless, then vanishes with its friends in a flash of light. The boys wake that night outside the Cerise Laboratory, wondering whether Mewtwo carried them home, and resolve to keep chasing their dreams.
