Synopsis

Ash and Goh enter Vermilion City’s Pokémon Grand Eating Contest, where Team Rocket’s Morpeko and a field of champion eaters stand in the way, and Goh’s Skwovet evolves into Greedent mid-contest to win the grand prize, a gourmet trip to Unova. Urged on by Professor Cerise, who watches with Chloe and an excited Chrysa, Ash enters Dragonite and Goh enters Skwovet against last year’s champion, Snorlax, and the legendary eater Emperor Blaziken. Unknown to the boys, Team Rocket have fasted for days to give their Morpeko a gigantic appetite. In the first round, a plate-by-plate Berry race, Hydreigon eats with all three heads and Bisharp slices its Berries, while smaller newcomers fall behind trying to skip the seeds; when Skwovet’s stomach fills with seeds, Goh has it fire them out with Bullet Seed. Dragonite turns out to be a surprisingly light eater, so Ash is eliminated and joins Cerise’s cheering section as ten Pokémon advance.

In the waiting tent, a Scientist tries to rattle Goh by pointing out that the other entrants are champions of major regional contests, until Team Rocket hand out special cookies that swell in the stomach and eliminate Lickitung, Heatmor, Swalot and Vigoroth. They also rig the second-round draw so that Blaziken and Snorlax must eat against each other, and the winner of each pair chooses the dish. Blaziken and Snorlax finish their curries neck and neck; Glalie’s Trainer tries to cool James’s scalding Berry stew with Freeze-Dry and freezes it solid, just as James intended, so Morpeko advances; and Goh, having guessed that the Scientist’s Muk dislikes sweets, picks a Pecha tart. When Skwovet tires of the sweetness, Goh revives its appetite with a spicy Tamato Berry hidden in its tail fur, and it joins Blaziken and Morpeko in the final.

The final calls for as many Torchic-shaped buns as possible, but Blaziken refuses to eat anything shaped like its pre-evolved form, wraps one in a napkin and leaves the stage. Team Rocket think victory is theirs until Morpeko’s Hunger Switch flips it into Full Belly Mode; when they try to force it to keep eating, it blasts them and itself off the stage with Aura Wheel. Skwovet is left one tray short of Morpeko’s record, its belly swollen, but it digs in with fresh determination and evolves into Greedent in front of everyone, its bigger appetite easily carrying it past the record to victory. Goh hugs his partner and looks forward to the trip to Unova, while the dejected Team Rocket discover that Morpeko has already switched back to Hangry Mode.
