Synopsis
At Johto’s Eclipse Castle, Chloe meets her double, Soleil, whose Espeon and Umbreon show her how Pokémon evolve out of the bonds they share, and the two girls foil a plot to seize the castle during the solar eclipse. When Professor Cerise, Chrysa and Ren introduce Chloe to Espeon and Umbreon and tell of Eclipse Castle in Johto, where the two are honoured, and its Eclipse Festival during a total solar eclipse, Chloe sets off with Ash and Goh. At the castle, Eevee senses Espeon and Umbreon on a nearby hill and runs off with Chloe in pursuit. The elderly Helia tells the boys how an Espeon and Umbreon saved the castle’s liege from a rebellion during a festival long ago and reveals that she is the current liege, handing over her title that day. On the hill, a girl named Soleil prays by a sundial when her Espeon foresees Chloe’s Eevee falling from a cliff and catches it with Psychic. Soleil looks almost exactly like Chloe.
Soleil playfully swaps clothes with Chloe, and Ash, Goh and Helia fail to notice until the girls point it out. Chloe confides that Eevee seems unable to evolve and that she wants it to choose its own path, and Soleil explains how her Pokémon chose theirs: her female Eevee evolved into Espeon the day after saving her from a fall, and her male Eevee became Umbreon the next night after protecting Espeon from a wild Crobat. Espeon, strong by day, and Umbreon, strong by night, make up for each other’s weaknesses, and she believes people and Pokémon should support one another the same way. She shows them a painting of the former liege Sorin moments before his younger brother Luno tried to seize the throne. As the festival begins, Chloe goes to change back into her own clothes and is ambushed by a ninja boy whose Ariados binds her with String Shot; mistaking her for Soleil, he flies off with her on his Noctowl.
The ninja confronts Soleil on the castle balcony, realises he captured the wrong girl, names himself Ilunas and demands to be declared liege in exchange for Chloe. Eevee has a vision of the tree where Chloe is held and leads Ash and Goh to her, and they return as the declaration is about to be made. Soleil and Chloe battle Ilunas’s Noctowl, Ariados and Ursaring: Espeon blocks their attacks with Reflect, Umbreon counters with Snarl, Eevee copies Reflect to stop Pin Missile, and Espeon’s Wish heals Umbreon after Ursaring’s Slash. At the moment of totality, when sun and moon align and both Pokémon are empowered, Eevee copies Dark Pulse, and Espeon and Umbreon combine Psychic and Dark Pulse to win. Soleil deduces from his lunar name that Ilunas descends from Luno, and he admits he wanted to end his family’s shame. Helia embraces him, regretting not finding him sooner, and Soleil, becoming liege, asks him to serve beside her, saying they must let go of the past. Ilunas accepts in tears.
