Synopsis

Searching a foggy forest for the Otherworldly, the trio discover that it is an Annihilape living with a band of Mankey and Primeape, and Liko’s Hatenna evolves into Hattrem to stop the furious Pokémon from fighting. Following noises deep in the woods, they meet three Naranja Academy students who look strikingly like them: Niko, Rob and Dash, who got lost on the way to their assigned Gyms. Hatenna heals them and their Pokémon with Heal Pulse, and they explain that after Niko repaired her broken bag strap with a vine from beside a spooky, ghost-faced tree, a terrifying Pokémon attacked and they could not drive it off. When Liko’s group say they want to find the creature for a report, the three flee in terror. As fog rolls in, a band of Mankey races through the treetops and an Annihilape appears; Liko’s Rotom Phone explains that it gains power beyond the limits of the flesh through rage. Floragato and Quaxly hold it back and Fuecoco’s Flame Charge knocks it down so that the children can escape to a riverbank.

Beside the ghost-faced tree they find Mankey holding a snapped vine, the one Niko used, and Dot reasons that the Mankey think the trio are the culprits. The Mankey pelt them with rocks, a group of Primeape charges, and Hatenna uses Psychic to stop a rock that nearly hits Terapagos. Annihilape returns, the others making way for it, and Dot guesses that it is the band’s guardian deity, but its Shadow Balls overpower the team’s combined Magical Leaf, Flamethrower and Water Gun, and some even hit the Mankey, which turn on it, disproving Dot’s theory. Hatenna notices the Mankey staring across the river at a large store of Berries beneath a tree: the vine was their bridge to their food. The group builds a new bridge from straw and logs, with Hatenna helping to fasten one end and Roy flying across on Kilowattrel to tie the other, and the Mankey, Primeape and Annihilape cross to their food. Liko thanks Hatenna for working it out and notices a brief glow around her.

The band’s excited stomping shakes loose a boulder from the cliff above; no one is hurt, but every Berry is smashed, and the short-tempered Pokémon erupt into a brawl. Two Primeape evolve into Annihilape mid-fight, revealing the evolutionary line, the Mankey are all knocked out, and three Annihilape are left fighting each other. Hatenna approaches to calm them but is overwhelmed by their raging emotions and evolves into Hattrem, which, as Dot’s Rotom Phone explains, silences anyone with strong emotions; with her newly learned Brutal Swing she defeats all three Annihilape and then, to Dot’s astonishment, immediately heals them. At sunset the children gather fresh Berries to share with the band, Dot films the Annihilape for her report, and everyone feels good about their reports and eager to meet more Pokémon. Hattrem is dismayed to find she is now too big to ride in Liko’s hood, but soon accepts it, and the trio head on towards Naranja Academy.
