Having a Wailord of a Time is the 34th episode of Pokémon: Advanced, the sixth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 307th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 310, Bulbapedia code AG034). It first aired in Japan on 17 July 2003 and in the United States on 22 May 2004. It falls within the season’s Slateport City: Drew & May’s first Contest stretch (EP32–EP36).
Synopsis
May trains so hard for the Contest that her Torchic feels neglected, and Brock recalls how he received Onix as his first Pokémon. When May finds a Wailord beached nearby, Nurse Joy hurries off to help, asking the boys to keep the Center’s three starter Pokémon indoors. Team Rocket, of course, decide to steal the Wailord.
The Center’s Torchic is as tough and cocky as May’s is gentle, and it is determined to get outside. Pikachu, Treecko and Max cannot stop it, it overpowers Corphish, and in the struggle it evolves into Combusken. Panicking, Ash and Max hide the Combusken and plan to give May’s Torchic to Stephanie, a new Trainer coming to choose her starter — until May finds out and furiously reclaims it.
Team Rocket lift the Wailord away under their balloon, but Combusken kicks through the ropes to free it and Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blasts the trio off. Stephanie picks Mudkip, her father is so taken with Treecko that he chooses it for himself, and Combusken stays on as the Center’s guard. May resolves to pay more attention to her own Torchic.
