Mastering Current Events! is the 49th episode of Pokémon DP: Galactic Battles, the twelfth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 616th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 621, Bulbapedia code DP154). It first aired in Japan on 3 December 2009 and in the United States on 24 April 2010. It falls within the season’s Towards Daybreak Town stretch (EP153–EP157).
Synopsis
Ash’s Gliscor learns Giga Impact while training with the retired Air Battle Master McCann, then chooses to stay behind with him. Scouting for the lost group, Gliscor leads them to a battle between McCann’s Scizor and his granddaughter Maya’s Chimecho, and Ash challenges McCann to an aerial match.
Scizor wins easily, dodging Steel Wing and Fire Fang with Double Team and finishing with Hyper Beam and Double Hit, and the ashamed Gliscor refuses food. Ash trains with it through the night, flying Staraptor with a ribbon so Gliscor can read the wind, and Dawn adds shredded foil to show the air currents.
In the morning rematch, Gliscor dodges Metal Claw, lands Sand Attack and Fire Fang and learns Giga Impact, but Scizor still wins with Hyper Beam and Double Hit. McCann offers to train Gliscor, Ash lets it decide, and Gliscor chooses to stay, so Ash hands McCann its Poké Ball and the group continue towards Daybreak Town as Gliscor watches.
