Flint Sparks the Fire! is the 8th episode of Pokémon DP: Sinnoh League Victors, the thirteenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 627th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 632, Bulbapedia code DP165). It first aired in Japan on 25 February 2010 and in the United States on 24 July 2010. It falls within the season’s Infernape, Volkner & Sunyshore Tower stretch (EP163–EP166).
Synopsis
Ash reaches the Sunyshore Gym and finds that its bored Leader, Volkner, hands out Badges without battling. Refusing a free Badge from the Gym’s robotic system, Ash is thrown out by security and freed by Flint of the Elite Four and his Infernape. Flint leads the group to the top of Sunyshore Tower, but Volkner waves them away.
At a café, the Proprietor explains that Flint and Volkner were childhood rivals and that Volkner lost interest in battling when no challenger could match him. To rekindle his friend’s passion, Flint battles Ash at the Gym while Volkner watches.
Flint’s Infernape overpowers Buizel with Flare Blitz, knocks out Ash’s newly evolved Infernape with Mach Punch, and finally defeats Pikachu when Volt Tackle meets Thunder Punch head-on. Meanwhile James mourns a bottle cap swept away by street cleaners, and Team Rocket decide to seize solar-powered Sunyshore Tower. Moved by Ash’s fighting spirit, Volkner announces that he will return to his duties and accept an official Gym battle.
