A Rush of Ninja Wisdom! is the 17th episode of Pokémon the Series: XY, the seventeenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 812th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 817, Bulbapedia code XY017). It first aired in Japan on 20 February 2014 and in the United States on 10 May 2014. It falls within the season’s Stops on the road to Cyllage stretch (EP11–EP19).
Synopsis
A young ninja named Sanpei and his Frogadier beat Ash and Froakie, then train Froakie in ninja speed, which ends with it learning Double Team. Sanpei appears out of a leaf-shroud trick, and in their battle his Frogadier outpaces Bubble and Pound, hides in Smokescreen, strikes from behind a decoy and finishes Froakie with Quick Attack.
Sanpei revives Froakie with a bitter Energy Root pill and agrees to teach Ash the secrets of speed, and Serena outfits Bonnie, Pikachu, Clemont and Dedenne as ninjas too. Sanpei explains that muscles work like springs, Clemont’s spring shoes launch him into the sky, and Froakie learns to run across water. Over lunch Sanpei reveals he wants to surpass his brothers, Ippei and his Greninja and Nihei and his Venusaur.
During rock-breaking training Team Rocket attack in a giant Meowth mecha and net Frogadier and Pikachu. Dodging its gold coins, Froakie learns Double Team, confusing the machine, and its Water Pulse and Pikachu’s Thunderbolt wreck the mech and blast Team Rocket off. Ash and Sanpei thank each other, promise to battle again and go their separate ways.
